Anatomy Considerations:
Anatomy may determine the length or gauge used, but most people will have no issues getting a first pair of classic lobe piercings. Depending on how far the softer lobe tissue reaches up the ear, some people may be limited to one or two pairs of lobe piercings.
Initial Jewelry Styles:
We prefer to start with straight flat back studs for initial piercing and healing. Rings can be used on occasion, so long as the ring used is large enough to accommodate for potential swelling and it is not a plain seam or clicker style ring.
These piercings are typically started with anywhere between 18g-14g depending on jewelry selection, but can go up to 4g for initial if requested.
For initial piercings larger than 14g we typically start with single flare glass jewelry.
Downsizing:
If a stud is used for initial piercing, downsizing will need to be done around the 4-6 week mark. If a ring is used for initial piercing, downsizing is not necessary and jewelry changes should not be done until fully healed unless there are healing issues.
Healing & Common Issues:
For most people healing earlobe piercings is fairly quick and uneventful. Earlobes typically heal within 3-4 months. Try your best not to sleep directly on the piercings, though lobe tissue is more malleable and less problematic to sleep on than most other piercings. Making sure the lobe is dry front and back after cleaning or showering is important as not to cause moisture irritation.
Common issues with healing lobe piercings include:
- Moisture irritation/irritation bumps
- Changing jewelry too soon and/or changing to a low quality material.
If any of these complications occur, please reach out to us for assistance. The sooner we find the root of the problem, the easier it will be to resolve.
Healed Jewelry Styles:
Earlobes are one of the most versatile piercings when it comes to jewelry styles.
- Small, dainty studs
- Large, decorative studs
- Chains and charms
- Small, dainty rings
- Large, decorative rings
- Hanging designs
There is also the option of stretching the lobes or piercing at a larger size, which offers a variety of jewelry styles such as weights, plugs, eyelets, hangers, and multiple rings. -

Anatomy Considerations:
The shape of the helix may help determine placement, but most people will have no issues with anatomy when getting a helix piercing.
Initial Jewelry Styles:
At Gold Fox we start all helix piercings with straight, flat back studs to eliminate excess movement and distortion of the tissue when swelling. We can start with a variety of different gem or non-gem tops including cluster style ends and smaller disks and beads.
These piercings are typically started at 16g or 14g depending on the style of initial jewelry.
Downsizing:
Downsizing for helix piercings is usually done between 6-8 weeks after the initial piercing depending on swelling. Some people may find they swell for less time or a longer amount of time. Downsizing is very important with helix piercings as they can migrate or reswell easily.
Healing & Common Issues:
Healing for helix piercings can take anywhere from 6 months to one year depending on the person and if there are any complications during the healing process.
Common issues with helix piercings include:
- Moisture irritation/irritation bumps
- Getting them caught/hit/snagged
- Changing jewelry too soon and/or changing to a low quality material
- Sleeping on them
- Not downsizing at the correct time
The latter two may cause the piercing to migrate and become crooked or develop irritation bumps, which may result in the need to remove the piercing, let it heal and repierce.
If any of these complications occur, please reach out to us for assistance. The sooner we find the root of the problem, the easier it will be to resolve.
Healed Jewelry Styles:

Anatomy Considerations:
Almost anyone can get a conch piercing! While anatomy isn’t much of a concern for these piercings, jewelry style, future jewelry goals and lifestyle may weigh in on suggested placement. A few things to think about are what style of jewelry you may want to wear in the future and what style of headphones you wear.
Initial Jewelry Styles:
At Gold Fox we start all conch piercings with straight, flat back studs to eliminate excess movement and distortion of the tissue when swelling. We can start with a variety of different gem or non-gem tops including cluster style ends and smaller disks and beads.
These piercings are typically started at 14g.

Anatomy Considerations:
The shape of the nostril may help determine placement, but most people will have no issues with anatomy when getting a nostril piercing.
Initial Jewelry Styles:
At Gold Fox we start all nostril piercings with straight, flat back studs to eliminate excess movement and distortion of the tissue when swelling. We can start with a variety of different gem or non-gem tops.
These piercings are typically started with 18g or 16g depending on anatomy and jewelry choice.
Downsizing:
Downsizing for nostril piercings is usually done between 4-6 weeks after the initial piercing depending on swelling. Some people may find they swell for less time or a longer amount of time.
Healing & Common Issues:
Healing for nostril piercings typically takes between 6-12 months depending on the person and whether or not there are any complications in the healing process.
Common issues with nostril piercings include:
- Moisture irritation/irritation bumps
- Getting them caught/hit/snagged
- Not downsizing at the correct time
- Changing jewelry too soon and/or changing to a low quality material
If any of these complications occur, please reach out to us for assistance. The sooner we find the root of the problem, the easier it will be to resolve.
Healed Jewelry Styles:
Healed nostril piercings can support:
- Small & large stud styles
- Classic & decorative rings
- Chains
To be safe, we typically suggest waiting 8 months to one year before switching from a stud to a ring. Switching to a ring before fully healed can cause irritation bumps and setbacks in healing. -
Total Starting Price:
Base total: $90
Price Breakdown:
Piercing fee: $60 each
Jewelry starting price: $30 for a classic titanium captive bead ring OR $55 for classic titanium circular barbell.
*Pricing listed is the minimum starting price only and can change based on the jewelry you select in store. You will be quoted total price during jewelry selection at your appointment.
Anatomy Considerations:
Location of the “sweet spot”:A septum piercing typically sits in a “sweet spot” between two sections of harder cartilage in the tip of the nose. This “sweet spot” can be a much different size, shape and height for different people, and location may change the way certain jewelry sits for you vs someone else. We can typically fit you with the look you’re interested in at the time of the piercing as septums tend not to swell much and don’t need larger jewelry to accommodate.
Deviations: Every body is different. Some people have symmetrical, straight forward anatomy and some have deviations! Having a deviation does NOT mean you can not or should not get your septum pierced. Depending on the severity of the deviation we may just need to take some extra time preparing to perform your piercing to be sure we get the best possible outcome. If at any time we feel your anatomy may negatively affect the outcome or healing of your piercing, we will discuss this with you before the piercing is performed.
Initial Jewelry Styles:
Septum piercings can be started with a variety of jewelry! Classic fixed or captive bead rings and gemmed or decorative rings work perfect in a fresh septum. A design or small bead is necessary on jewelry for a fresh septum piercing so that the seam on the jewelry does not rotate through the piercing channel itself which can cause trauma and prolonged healing.
A circular barbell can be utilized if the piercing will need to be flipped up and hidden at any time during the healing process.
Septum piercings are typically started between 16g-12g but can be accommodated at larger sizes. Please contact us for availability of jewelry larger than 12g.
Downsizing:
Septum piercings do not need downsizing. If you decide you would like a smaller or tighter ring, please wait until fully healed before changing your jewelry.
Healing & Common Issues:
Healing for septum piercings is typically very easy. It is rare we see issues with this piercing. For most people healing will take between 3-4 months. During this time you will develop crusties, some discharge, and may notice that the piercing smells bad occasionally. Not to worry: just give it a good spray with some sterile saline to clean things up.
If any complications occur, please reach out to us for assistance. The sooner we find the root of the problem, the easier it will be to resolve.
Healed Jewelry Styles:
Healed septum piercings can support:
- Classic or decorative seam rings
- Gemmed or non-gemmed captive bead rings

Anatomy Considerations:
Rook piercings are anatomy dependent - some people may not be able to get a traditional rook piercing based on the size and definition of their rook. If anatomy is not suited for a traditional rook piercing, a faux rook (scapha/flat piercing) could be a great alternative!
Jewelry Styles:
Rook piercings are started with a curved barbell. These may be a classic curved barbell with plain beads on each end, gemstones on both ends, or a combination of a bead & a gemstone. Rings tend not to work well for initial rook piercings because smaller rings don’t allow much room for swelling, and larger rings tend not to fit well in the area.
These are typically started at 16g or 14g depending on anatomy and jewelry selection.
Downsizing:
It is rare that rook piercings need downsizing; however, if you would like to get a shorter piece you can absolutely do so when fully healed.
Healing & Common Issues:
Healing for rook piercings typically takes between 6-12 months depending on the person and whether or not there are any complications in the healing process.
Common issues with rook piercings include:
- Moisture irritation/irritation bumps
- Getting them caught/hit/snagged
- Sleeping on them
- Changing jewelry too soon and/or changing to a low quality material
If any of these complications occur, please reach out to us for assistance. The sooner we find the root of the problem, the easier it will be to resolve.

Anatomy Considerations:
Daith piercings are anatomy dependent. We will check anatomy at the time of the appointment. Some people may not have the anatomy to support a daith piercing, so it’s good to have an alternative piercing choice in mind just in case! A conch piercing is a great alternative as it fills a similar space.
Initial Jewelry Styles:
At Gold Fox we start all daith piercings with rings. Initial jewelry must have a design or bead in place so there are no seams rotating through the piercing channel. Initial jewelry must also be large enough to accommodate for swelling in a fresh piercing. Size is dependent on your specific anatomy and may be different for different people!
These piercings are typically started at 16g or 14g depending on anatomy and jewelry selection.
Downsizing:
Daith piercings do not need a downsize! You’ll wear the initial piece of jewelry throughout the healing process and could wear it for as long as you have the piercing.
Healing & Common Issues:
Daith piercings typically take about 8-12 months for full healing depending on the person, but can take longer if there are complications.
Common issues with daith piercings include:
- Moisture irritation/irritation bumps
- Sleeping on them
- Irritation bumps from pressure or overswelling
If any of these complications occur, please reach out to us for assistance. The sooner we find the root of the problem, the easier it will be to resolve.
Healed Jewelry Styles:
Healed daith piercings can support:
Large or small diameter rings
Decorative rings
Classic seam rings
Curved barbells can be worn in healed daith piercings; however, they may be uncomfortable as they can flip backwards and are more difficult to get in and out. -

Forward helix piercings are anatomy dependent! Not everyone has the anatomy to support a forward helix piercing, so it’s good to have an alternative piercing in mind just in case.
Some people may have anatomy for only one or two forward helix piercings.
An anatomy consultation will be done during your appointment and a piercer will advise you of your options.
Initial Jewelry Styles:
At Gold Fox we start all forward helix piercings with straight, flat back studs to eliminate excess movement and distortion of the tissue when swelling. We can start with a variety of different gem or non-gem tops but suggest sticking with smaller ends for initial piercing.
These piercings are typically started with an 18g or 16g depending on the style of initial jewelry.
Downsizing:
Downsizing for forward helix piercings is usually done between 6-8 weeks after the initial piercing depending on swelling. Some people may find they swell for less time or a longer amount of time. Downsizing is very important with forward helix piercings as they can migrate or reswell easily.
Healing & Common Issues:
Healing for forward helix piercings can take anywhere from 8 months to one year depending on the person and if there are any complications during the healing process.
Common issues with helix piercings include:
- Moisture irritation/irritation bump
- Getting them caught/hit/snagged
- Changing jewelry too soon and/or changing to a low quality material

Anatomy Considerations:
The shape of the nostril and cartilage placement may determine the limit of how high high nostril piercings can be placed. Some people may have limited space for high nostrils.
Initial Jewelry Styles:
High nostril piercings are started with straight, flat back studs. We can start with a variety of different gem or non-gem tops.
These piercings are typically started with 16g or 14g depending on anatomy and jewelry choice.
Downsizing:
Downsizing for high nostril piercings is usually done between 4-8 weeks after the initial piercing depending on swelling. Some people may find they swell for less time or a longer amount of time.

Anatomy Considerations:
Almost anyone can get a lip piercing! Anatomy may help determine placement, especially when it comes to paired lip piercings.
Philtrum piercings are anatomy dependent and can be limited by the length and placement of the frenulum on the inside of the top lip.
Initial Jewelry Styles:
At Gold Fox we start all lip piercings with straight, flat back studs to eliminate excess movement, distortion of the tissue and migration when healing. We can start with a variety of different gem or non-gem tops.
These piercings are typically started at 14g.
Downsizing:
Most lip piercings will need two total downsizes. The initial downsize is usually done between 2-3 weeks after the initial piercing depending on swelling. The second downsize is usually done between 4-6 weeks after the initial piercing. After the first downsize, the flat back will start to “nest” or settle within the lip tissue which gives the front some excess length and that is when the second downsize will be done. Some people may find they swell for less time or a longer amount of time. Downsizing is very important with lip piercings as tooth and gum damage can be more prevalent if jewelry is not properly fitted.
Healing & Common Issues:
Healing for lip piercings can take anywhere from 6-8 months depending on the person and if there are any complications during the healing process.
Common issues with lip piercings include:
- Moisture irritation/irritation bumps

Anatomy Considerations:
Navel piercings are anatomy dependent. Not everyone has the anatomy to support a navel piercing so it’s a great idea to have a backup piercing in mind just in case!
There are two different styles of navel piercing that can be done and each depends on the shape of the navel. Your piercer will do an in depth consultation at the beginning of your appointment to determine if you have the anatomy to support a navel piercing, and if you do, what type of navel piercing is best for your anatomy. Initial jewelry style will depend on whether a traditional or floating navel piercing is best for your navel shape.
Initial Jewelry Styles:
At Gold Fox we start all navels with threaded curved barbells.
Traditional Navel Piercing:
Traditional navel piercings are what you have likely seen most often. They can be done with gems on both ends, one end, or just plain beads on both ends. Depending on anatomy, smaller gemstones may be suggested for the bottom gem.
Floating Navel Piercing:
If your anatomy will best support a floating navel piercing, the bottom portion of the jewelry will be either a flat disk, M&M shaped disk, or a ball end. This is to prevent any unnecessary pressure on the bottom portion of the jewelry when you sit down or bend over. A gem or flat end can be worn on the top portion of the jewelry.
Navel piercings are typically started at 14g or 12g depending on anatomy.
Downsizing:
Traditional navel piercings generally do not need downsizing. Floating navels may or may not need downsizing - your piercer will advise you of whether you will need to downsize and when at your appointment.

- Irritation from playing with the jewelry
- Changing jewelry too soon and/or changing to a low quality material
- Not downsizing at the correct time
- Irritation from overuse of mouthwash or whitening toothpaste
- Irritation from smoking
If any of these complications occur, please reach out to us for assistance. The sooner we find the root of the problem, the easier it will be to resolve.

Anatomy will be checked during your appointment.
Initial Jewelry Styles:
At Gold Fox we start all bridge piercings with a straight barbell. Either plain beads or gem ends can be used.
Bridge piercings are typically started at 12g.
Downsizing:
Bridge piercings should typically be downsized at about the 4-6 week mark from the initial piercing. Some may find they swell for less time or a longer period of time depending on the person.

Anatomy Considerations:
Industrial piercings are anatomy dependent. Not everyone has the anatomy to support an industrial piercing so it’s a great idea to have a backup piercing in mind just in case!
Occasionally a custom industrial can be done on those who do not have anatomy for a traditional industrial. A piercer will work with your ear shape and supporting anatomy to create a piercing similar to a traditional industrial. Jewelry and piercing price may vary depending on the agreed upon piercing placements.
Anatomy will be checked during your appointment.
Initial Jewelry Styles:
At Gold Fox we start all industrial piercings with a straight barbell. Either plain beads or gem ends can be used.
Industrial piercings are typically started at 14g.
Downsizing:
Industrial piercings should typically be downsized at about the 4-6 week mark from the initial piercing. Some may find they swell for less time or a longer period of time depending on the person.
Healing & Common Issues:
Industrial piercings typically take about 12 months for full healing depending on the person, but can take longer if there are complications.
Industrial piercings can be difficult to heal as they are sensitive to pressure, snags, and being slept on. Because of this we generally require someone to have experience successfully healing another piercing in cartilage (such as a helix or conch) before getting an industrial.
Common issues with industrial piercings include:
- Moisture irritation/irritaiton bumps
- Irritation from getting them caught/hit/snagged
- Irritation bumps from pressure or overswelling
- Irritation from not downsizing

Anatomy Considerations:
VCH piercings are anatomy dependent. Not everyone has the anatomy to support a VCH piercing so it’s a great idea to have a backup piercing in mind just in case! Anatomy will be checked during your appointment.
Initial Jewelry Styles:
At Gold Fox we start all VCH piercings with a threaded curved barbell. Either a plain disk or gem ends can be used.
VCH piercings are typically started at 12g.
Downsizing:
VCH piercings typically do not need to be downsized. If you notice excess length on your jewelry after healed, you’re welcome to come in for a downsize.
Healing & Common Issues:
VCH piercings typically take about 3-4 months for full healing depending on the person and tend to be easy healers.
We do not see many healing issues as these piercings tend to be fast healers. We do ask that you are gentle and listen to your body during the healing process.
Healed Jewelry Styles:
Most people stick with curved barbells for VCH piercings. They can be either plain/basic curved barbells or gemmed curved barbells. Comfortability is important to consider when choosing a jewelry style.
